The head of the World Health Organization said Thursday, calling an extremely high level of alarm, said _and I quote_: “The Zika virus is now spreading explosively around the Americas”
WHO official Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri said that It is estimated that there can be 3 to 4 million cases of Zika virus in the Americas within a 12-month period.
He said that the estimate is covering all Zika infections, including those cases that might not report clinical symptoms.
Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri said _and I quote_: “The lack of any immunity to Zika virus and the fact the mosquitoes that spread it can be found almost everywhere in the Americas , both explain the speed of the Zika virus’s spread.
An emergency committee meeting will be convened by WHO on the Zika virus next Monday in Geneva. The meeting will review any evidence that is related to the virus and offer recommendations.
WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan told her board members _and I quote_: “The level of concern is high, as is the level of uncertainty,” “We need to get some answers, quickly.”
While it’s been known for decades, zika virus’ alarms have raised only recently about its connection with neurological symptoms and birth malformations.
Pregnant women and their babies at high risk
The number of cases in the Americas has grown exponentially, the most endangered by it are particularly pregnant women. More than 4,000 cases of microcephaly in infants born to Zika infected women have been reported in Brazil alone.
With no vaccine, It turns out that controlling mosquitoes is only available key.
Right now, Zika virus has neither vaccine to prevent it,. Nor a medicine to treat those who already have it.
Efforts now are made to contain the Asian tiger mosquito which spreads the disease.
Still, It’s very challenging control the number of mosquitoes in any specific area.
