After we have been announced that a head transplant will be held by the next year, the master mind of this highly controversial procedure, the Italian doctor “Sergio Canavero”, shows no sign of hesitation as he teased the international press by announcing that the procedure has been successfully carried out on a monkey!!!
Dr. Canavero shared some shared some details on the progress made so far by himself and his partner, the Chinese, Dr. “Xiaoping Ren” who spent a great amount of time practicing the procedure on mice. Although he has performed the surgery to more than 1000 mice, and although the animals managed to breathe and drink after the surgery, all of them ,the mice, only lived for a few minutes after.
Canavero announced that Ren’s team has already carried out the procedure on a monkey, however; it doesn’t sound like any progress has been mad and the monkey must have died too. There is no official statement about the monkey’s condition after the transplant, but if the monkey didn’t appear in the press it means that it is already dead.
Dr. Ren and Dr. Canavero both announced that , and I quote , : “The monkey fully survived the procedure without any neurological injury of whatever kind,”
But one member of the Dr. Ren’s team leaked that the monkey was euthanized after just 20 hours for ethical reasons.
He also said that the spinal cords of the monkey were not rightfully connected.
What makes us subspecies, the fact that Canavero only talked to the press before officially publishing the work, a thing that the scientific community consider it to be very taboo.
We need to know that Canavero and Ren are certainly not the only scientists working towards achieving a successful head transplant. A group of south Korean scientists ,led by Dr. C-Yoon Kim, has been studying and processing the spinal cords of live mice. The animals were able to move after that.
Now, it’s best to wait with skepticism to see whether there will be a head transplant on a human subject next year, or not.
