If you live on this planet, you probably know what a fidget spinner is, and maybe you have even tried one, but the trends do not seem to spread so fast when you live outside, more specifically on the International Space Station.
In this case, when it looked like the spinner’s fashion was coming to an end, who brings them back to the center of the discussion is astronaut Randy Bresnik. Bresnik is on the space station as part of NASA’s 52/53 expedition.
Here’s what happens when you spin a spinner in space:
You probably have not wondered what would happen if you spin a spinner in space, or maybe yes, but beyond that, the answer is really interesting, because things outside of Earth gravity are often quite different from what they are inside the planet.
Astronaut Bresnik and his colleagues make several striking spin-offs with the spinner, such as spinning on themselves as the spinner continues spinning. The pirouettes made by the astronauts are possible in the space station due to the microgravity, which sustains them in a continuous state of free fall.
The more fun is how astronauts have fun. Given that they have been locked up in the space station for months, the spinner can be a good tool, perhaps to take away some of the stress. And if in the process they decide to upload a video so that we can all see how the spinner turns, much better.
The fidget spinner, on the other hand, rotates freer than ever, because the force of the air does not stop it in that environment, although, beyond the air does not brake the spinner, the friction with the central zone of the apparatus still exists, causing sooner or later to brake anyway. But the spinner is still free while spinning in the air without a person having to be holding it.
Spinners became famous sometime after their appearance when millions of people in the world began to use them. This small little spinning article became so controversial that several pedagogy specialists began to investigate their effects on children, and there was even controversial research by the Russian government about its use as a possible mechanism of massive mental control after a congressman was found using one in full parliamentary session.
What do you think about the video of this American astronaut using a spinner in space? Have you ever wondered what would happen if you used a spinner in a microgravity environment?
